Book 11 of the Demon Accords. Las Vegas. Sin City. What happens in Vegas...could kill most of the human race. When all trails lead Chris, Tanya and their entire team to the desert gambling mecca, the stakes become the highest possible. Facing a hybrid demon werewolf, his death witch mother, undead strippers and pregnancy cravings, Chris must rely on his team like never before if he's to have any chance at saving the race of man, not to mention a spot in preschool for his unborn kids.

Snake Eyes A novel of the Demon Accords 9781520278063 John Conroe Books

The nice thing about Conroe's books is that the whole story is told. The action, the personalities, the snark, and the tiny details that make these people more than flat comic book characters. The character development is tight and consistent with the series canon; the world building continues to walk the line of plausibility. Conroe's imagination has not only combined magic, physics, and religion; he's also drawn in prehistory and the very building blocks of the planet.

At the same time, these books are fun. They're entertaining as hell, and a great diversion from...well, anything that ails you. Thanks, Mr. Conroe, for the New Year's gift.

Snake Eyes A novel of the Demon Accords 9781520278063 John Conroe Books Reviews

John Conroe just keeps nailing it with his Demon Accords series! He has become an accomplished writer, on a par with Jim Butcher and Patricia Briggs, two of my longtime favorites in this genre. For all their fantastic powers, he keeps his characters real and down-to-earth, with everyday problems to overcome. Their weaknesses and occasional failures lend depth and wealth to the fast-paced story line. Snake Eyes is a winner, as are they all. Whether you are a long-time fan or a newcomer to this series, you will be fascinated by this latest foray into the fascinating world of Tanya, Chris, Declan and the rest. I've read the series in sequence several times, as I wait for Conroe's next novel; I'm beginning my second read of Snake Eyes today. The ONLY complaint I have about the series is each story seems to be WAY too SHORT! I don't want them to end. Of course, I say the same things about Butcher, Briggs and Scalzi, so WELCOME, John Conroe, to the club!
I thought that the plot and the action was excellent, but I was disappointed in some holes and the lack of editorial control. The author or the reviewer should have caught the misspelled last name of the New York Alpha and the inconsistent number of days one is supposed to have before announcing ones intentions to the Master of the city between this book and the previous books. Also, when a majority special event as described in book happens, shouldn't there be at least a mention of a least a phone call to a certain someone in upstate New York, if not a visit? I suppose it is a good problem to have when trying to track character development and supernatural culture rules while having the opportunity to write a long series, but the author needs to hire (or fire) someone to keep track of the world of Demon Accords, so that the next book doesn't feel as if pieces are missing or inconsistent as this one did (unfortunately, I'm a big fan and a re-reader). Even Stephen King had to in order to finish his series. If you are reading this review figuring out whether or not to buy this book for your enjoyment, please do so, it's a great book, but the earlier ones are even better.
It was nice to have Chris and Tanya back front and center. However I would have been a little happier if the book head Focus just on them but Delcan also got a lot of time in this one as well. Honestly though I think the author is going to have to do something with Chris as he's starting to look a little bland compared too Delcan, I mean he's supposed to be God's hammer but every time he gets a chance to shine he's outdone by the Wonderboy witch. I think Mr. Conroe either needs to decide to marginalize Chris (a terrible idea IMO) because he seems to be sick of him or bring back his status as biggest badass on the block in a meaningful way, I mean really one guy has to be the biggest baddest dude on the block and that's always been Chris (my favorite BTW) it seems not so much now and he's really not good for much else he certainly not the brains of the operation. It's also time for Chris and Grim to assimilate fully into the same personality. Otherwise it was a great book writing was excellent as usual, editing mistakes were almost non-existent and this continues to be one of my absolute favorite series.
Snake Eyes is a fun addition to the ongoing Demon Accords series, and should not be read as a standalone book. The story is interesting and moves well, challenging the increasingly powerful heroes in new ways. While I enjoyed the return to a world viewed solely through Chris's eyes, I miss Declan's perspective. Chris has become so powerful over the course of the series that Declan, with his human limitations, is more relatable.

What I liked about this book was the more light-hearted tone. Many of the books featuring Chris get downright depressing with the way everyone in authority keeps screwing him over. SPOILER- The death of President Garth looks to change that, and I really hope future stories will include a saner approach to the supernatural from the government.

This book neatly wraps up some storylines and sets up future stories, both in Declan's planned trip to Faerie and in the revelation to the new President that not all gates lead to Hell. It also came across as the seachange novel, where the author is clearly indicating that it is time for the series (and the heroes) to kick it up a notch and face a new and improved set of villains. You know, because demon werewolves aren't much of a challenge.
This one from John Conroe, opens all sorts of doors to an entire new series featuring all manner and types of tales. The character building continues to be better and better. The bringing back to humanity of the God Hammer is a wonderful set of strokes. The widening of the relationship between Chris, Tania and the rest of the team and re-establishing contact with College Arcane and the Madison Farm adventure from Black Frost is a really excellent touch. This whole thing now has potential to be numerous sets of stories across the whole of the universe. Good on Ya Conroe!!! Heck of a tale in and of itself and well written in bringing to a close the whole thread that began in Rogues. Loved the wrap up of Caeco and Declan. Nicely done! Looking forward to more from you in this storyline. Nice job on the political front as well. Like the sketching of the storyline for Mack and Jenna. Want to read that again already. 'Nuff said, and thanks for the hard work that goes into producing a wonderful story over and over again.
